The Origins

In the Biella area during the 1920s, skiing spread rapidly. The growing demand for equipment was met above all by artisan production — and for that, the most trusted craftsmen were, without doubt, the carpenters.

In 1925 two young apprentice carpenters, Mr. Castello and Mr. Bruno, both passionate skiers, decided to open their own workshop in the Vernato district. There, in summer, they made skis in pure ash wood and, in winter, furniture.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, ski production was suspended.

The New Generation

After the Second World War, ski production resumed under the brand “Sci Cervinia”.

Meanwhile Mr. Bruno’s son, then just a boy, began working in the carpentry shop. In 1950 Luigi was 12 years old: an enterprising kid, he started building snow sleds from ash wood offcuts and found a buyer in the “Nicola Sport” company of Biella. That production lasted two years. From the offcuts of adult skis he also began building children’s skis, finding buyers in Turin and beyond.

With the proceeds of this work, Luigi managed to put together the sum needed to buy out his father’s partner, Mr. Castello — and in 1953 Ski Sises was born.

The first skis were called “Cortina”, built of plywood with a plastic-coated base and screwed-on segmented edges. Later models took more captivating names to attract customers, inspired by fighter planes: the “Tunderjet”, the “F104” and so on.

From the ’60s to Today

From 1961 to 1969 Ski Sises exhibited its skis at the Turin Mountain Show, selling directly to the public.

From then on it began trading equipment such as boots and sportswear, and in 1973/74 it stopped producing skis and turned the workshop into a sporting goods store. It was the era of the legendary Valanga Azzurra and of Gustavo Thöni — so the shop started selling Spalding skis.

Today Ski Sises is a clothing and sports equipment store, a point of reference for sports lovers in Biella and beyond. The shop is still run by the same Bruno family.
